I’m so happy that the weather has finally taken a turn, and even up here in Canada things are coming up roses… or tulips perhaps. To help welcome Spring, I’ve created some pretty pillows for my master bedroom.
I’ve been wanting to do this post for the past two months, but…. I couldn’t find the right fabric to make my springy pillows. I wanted something bright, vibrant, and had the effect of a watercolour painting. I searched several fabric stores for just the right print, but no luck. Boo!!!
I was walking around the dollar store last week looking for something in the kitchen aisle (I can’t even recall what it was), but then these pretty aprons caught my attention. Squirrel…….. I thought to myself that these were the perfect type of print I had been looking for. But they’re aprons. Hmmmmmm….. Here’s my internal dialogue while standing in the kitchen aisle:
Question to myself: What to do?
Answer to myself: How about just cut them and use them as the fronts of pillows?
Response to myself: Yes!!!! That’s it.
Here is the apron all unfolded and ready to go. Isn’t is so pretty? The apron is made of a heavy fabric, very similar to the texture of an outdoor fabric; so I put it in the dryer for about 10 minutes to get the wrinkles out.
I sewed simple envelope pillow covers, using some white fabric I had on hand to use as the backing of the pillows. After sewing the envelope pillow covers, I stuffed some pillows inside through a slit in the back. I didn’t need to purchase the pillow inserts; instead just using two of my pillows that were lying around. I intentionally didn’t sew up the slit in the back, since I can use these same pillow inserts in different pillow covers as the seasons change.
Here are the pillows all stuffed and fluffed 🙂
They add just the right amount of drama to the room, without being too bossy and overwhelming.
To add in some of that pretty green colour, I pulled my magnolia leaf wreath off my front door, and added it above the bed to help tie the Springy theme all together.
Fancy a little breakfast in bed? Just don’t sit on the bed….. cause it’ll probably knock over the coffee. Lol.
Moral of the story: Don’t just consider traditional fabrics when doing a project, and be on the lookout for cheap items that can be easily transformed.
