It’s a new year and we’re back for another month of the Thrift Store Challenge. I’m so happy to be back! I’ve been out of the blogging game for a bit and taken some time to spend with loved ones and doing some serious planning for future projects. However, in the meantime, I’m so glad to be participating in this fun monthly challenge with some blogging friends, and I’ll show you how I repurposed this old broken sled into fun winter decor. Huge SHOUT OUT to Amanda from Domestically Creative for hosting this amazing monthly challenge.
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

It’s no secret that I HATE winter…like a lot. I honestly don’t know why I live in Canada with it’s freezing temperatures and dead car batteries. But even the cold doesn’t stop me from putting together something cute for my living room.
This cute little sled started off as a typical baby sled from a thrift store that also happened to be broken. Come to think of it, that’s likely the reason why it was only $3.99!!!
The top piece was broken off and could easily be repaired with a bit of wood glue and some time. But, I thought the whole thing could look a little more like a vintage sled if I just took the top part off altogether.
Voila! Project completed. #easiestprojectever
One of my projects I’ve planned for 2018 is to add custom shelving over my sideboards that surround the living room fireplace. But, until then, I’m going to keep decorating for the seasons to my little heart’s content.
I simply added some fun shutters on both sides of the sled (which were also a thrift store find incidentally) and a cute little DIY wreath I made last Christmas, and it’s all ready to go.
Plus, I also got to use my fun little letterboard which was a Christmas gift last month, where I could add my real feelings about winter. So fun, right?
Thank you so much for following along and I’ll catch you later friends,
And now for more thrifty goodness!
Check out what my fellow upcyclers created below!

This is adorable. Good choice to remove the entire top part. It really does look like a vintage sled. We moved to Iowa 22 years ago and I think we are still here because I am not sure we could ever sell this house. It is soooo cold here and I moved from California. At first we liked it but now….not so much. LOL! At least you are finding fun things to do and to decorate to pass the winter away. Nice job!
I’m with you Sue-I hate Winter! But I love your display and the letter board sentiment is perfect! Great Upcycle!
Such a sweet update, I love it! Winter decor is actually some of my favorite, and your little sled is perfect. Well done with that thrift makeover 🙂
I love the vignette you created. The sled was a great find. It looks perfect with the shutters and wreath,
Beautiful display, and yes, I agree, cold weather suck. However, today was fabulous.
What a great find! I need to find a wooden sled for part of my winter decor, but small chance of that in Florida, lol. Love how yours turned out!
Sue, I love your display! The shutters make such a nice backdrop and that sled was such a cute find. I always look for a sled, but they’re seldom seen in the Deep South where I live, LOL. I’d say you’re making great use of your space till you get your shelves built.
Your upcycle sled project is quite adorable, quick, and easy Sue! And also a very creative design vignette! You definitely have a technique of putting things together to create this special look! Impressive indeed!
You made me laugh, it is true I can’t imagine someone hating cold weather living in Canada. Anyway the sled is perfect for decorating during winter, and the wreath is lovely too
I love this idea. Nicely done!
Hooray for EASY projects! Love the transformation and who would have thought it’d be that easy??? BTW your built ins are gorgeous!
What an easy repurpose with a big effect! It’s adorable! Love the wreath you made and those snow shoes as well! I got a letterboard for Christmas, too, don’t you just love it? xo Kathleen|Our Hopeful Home
How simple but perfect! I also really love your wreath 🙂
Such a cute idea to use that sled on your bookshelf. It looks so much prettier without the top and a beautiful wreath hanging on it. Without the red it works all winter long in your decor.
I love the whole vignette you put together with your sled. The natural wood is gorgeous and perfect to carry your decor through winter.
adorable! I love all of it. Haha somedays I wish I had that sign, but it’s already the end of January so it’s about half over depending on when spring decides to show up (thats a tricky one in New York)
Cute! We have “winter” in Arizona so I’m always envious (for like a day!) of those that experience snow, sleds and slush! Visiting from Thrift Store Challenge.
