The January #30dayflip Challenge was to come up with an Organization Hack for under $50.00. This hack was perfect for the month of January, as it’s a time when everyone is still motivated to get things neat, tidy and organized. I loved this theme, since it motivated me to FINALLY install a bookcase in my office/guest room/playroom.
The total amount spent on this project was $49.96. Here’s a breakdown
of my costs:
Bookcase (purchased used): $25.00;
Faux Orchid on Shelf #1: $2.00;
Chalkboard drawers on shelf #2: $6.00 in total from the Dollar Store;
Paper/magazine holders: $4.99 from Ikea;
Storage box x3: $0.99 each from a thrift store;
Crown Moudling from the Home Depot: $9.00.
Everything else on the shelf was found by me shopping my house for items that needed a new spot 🙂
Here is what the bookshelf looked like Before I painted it. I used an off white chalk paint that I had on hand, so that I didn’t have to sand it first.
Before I began painting the shelf, I removed the backing of the shelf and then added some pretty wallpaper. I had this wallpaper on hand as well, which I bought years ago and never got around to actually using. I love how it has a shimmery effect, and thought it would work well in the space. This pic shows the wallpaper in place after the backing was reinstalled.
I then installed the crown moulding and used some caulk to fill in the small gaps. The caulk helps give it a seamless look. This crown still needs to be painted, but this pic give you an idea of how it looks.
Here is a close up of how I played around with some of the items on the shelf in order to figure out where to place them and what looked the best.
Still playing around to see what works.
I secured the shelf to the wall (to ensure it wouldn’t be a tipping hazard), and I also used my nail gun to secure it to the murphy bed beside it. This sucker isn’t going anywhere. Lol.
Here is the shelf in it’s rightful spot. I love that it allows me to quickly access anything I need and will help keep things tidy and organized.
As always, thank you so much to my lovely co-hosts, Jeanette from Snazzy Little Things and Meredith from Arts and Classy. Please join us next month for the February #30DayFlip Challenge, where the theme is “No Sew DIY Project” using $20.00 or less. This can be anything from a pillow cover, an upholstery project, a table runner, or anything….. Click on the link below to read more. We’d love to have you join us:
